Precision Fermentation
Our process begins with the careful selection of yeast, which are safe and efficient biological 'factories' for protein production. We harness artificial intelligence and genetic engineering to embed desired protein genes into these yeasts, illustrating a seamless fusion of cutting-edge technology with biological systems. Once genetically enhanced, the yeasts are cultivated in bioreactors, where fermentation takes place, enabling them to proliferate and synthesize proteins. This step smartly reuses raw materials from other industries, reinforcing our commitment to the circular economy. The resulting proteins are identical to their natural counterparts and are non-genetically modified, reflecting our dedication to natural authenticity. Moreover, our methodology is distinguished by its significant sustainability impact, markedly reducing land use by 90%, energy consumption by fivefold, water use by 96%, and greenhouse gas emissions by 91%, thereby underscoring our commitment to an environmentally responsible future.

Ark is the pioneering startup in Brazil to produce lactoferrin using state-of-the-art precision fermentation. Lactoferrin is a valuable milk protein present in very low concentrations in cow's milk and in large quantities in human milk.

Dr. Marília Knychala
CEO
Dr. Marília Knychala is a biologist with a master's degree in Biochemistry and a Ph.D. in Biotechnology. She completed an exchange period at the National Laboratory for Energy and Geology (LNEG) in Lisbon, Portugal. With over a decade of experience, she has specialized in yeast genetic engineering and the exploration of alternative carbon sources for industrial applications. Currently, she works as a postdoctoral researcher in the Biotechnology and Biosciences Program at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, focusing her efforts on precision fermentation. In 2022, she founded Ark Bio Solutions, a visionary startup dedicated to sustainable alternative protein production through biotechnological routes, where she serves as the CEO.
Dr. Débora Trichez
CSO - Synthetic Biology
Dr. Débora Trichez is a biologist with a Ph.D. in Biotechnology and postdoctoral research in Synthetic Biology at the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA) in Toulouse, France. From 2015 to 2022, she worked at Embrapa Agroenergia as a visiting researcher, developing projects related to microbial metabolic engineering, industrial microbiology and bioeconomy. Currently, she works as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Chemical and Food Engineering (UFSC/SC) and, since January 2023, is a founding member and CSO in the area of Synthetic Biology at Ark Bio Solutions.
